The Castle Museum of the Budapest History Museum opened Au Revoir! on October 4, 2019. The international photo exhibition of photographers of Hungarian origin in France.

The Budapest public can now see the selection, which includes a good number of never-before-seen pictures, and consists exclusively of vintage copies (prints from the period made by the artists), mostly from French private and public collections.

Hungary has never seen such a large-scale photo exhibition covering a period of 100 years, extending to the present day, which provides such a wide selection of the works of Hungarian photographers in France: 31 famous artists who are also popular in Hungary (e.g. André Kertész, Brassaï, Robert Capa, Lucien Hervé), as well as artists of Hungarian origin who are still little known to the Hungarian public (e.g. Rogi André, Ergy Landau, Ervin Marton, Emeric Feher, André Steiner etc.) who were and are still active in France from the 1920s to the present day.

One of the special features of the exhibition are the three recently unearthed photographs of Kertész, which are almost a hundred years old, and which interested parties can see here for the first time. André Kertész’s oeuvre is a reference in photo history, the importance of which is adequately reflected in the exhibition.

The title of the exhibition (“Au Revoir!”, i.e. Goodbye!) refers, in addition to the Francophile connection, to the bipolar existence of the creators and their works, the possibility of their appearance and disappearance; to the visit home without the illusion of staying, to the consoling farewell with the verbal promise of return, to the actuality of a non-final departure.

The nearly two hundred presented works are complemented by original documents, objects and moving image materials, as well as contemporary contact copies, which give extraordinary insight into the creative processes.
