Temporary Exhibition
Construction work in Budapest often takes place in areas where a town (Buda, Pest or Óbuda) or village houses have stood since the Middle Ages. In these places, archaeological methods can be used to learn about the life of the people who lived there before the construction works.
Near the Árpád Bridge, in the medieval village of Szent László, a lost ring and a handful of coins were among the finds. On the outskirts of a village in Csepel, the staff of the Medieval Department of the BTM may have found relics of a custom linked to a building sacrifice. In Buda, on the hill of Buda Castle, the lobby of the Royal Palace has always been a special place. In the deep wells and pits of the plots, we have often found objects of outstanding quality from a single household, and the rubbish thrown out outside the castle walls has yielded many special fragments from far away places, such as Italy, Germany or China. In addition to the Old Buda synagogue, we also found relics of the 18th century Jewish community. A detailed examination of the animal bones recovered from the excavations showed how the animals were kept or what diseases they suffered from.
Visitors can get a colourful and detailed picture of all this in the new temporary exhibition at the BTM Castle Museum.
